Ocean Therapy Unveiled: How the Sea Heals

Updated: Mar 9

With a name like Seager, I guess it was always predestined that I would be a child of the tide. My mum made sure that my early years were spent running carefree on the beaches of her native North Devon, surfing the waves - and the sand dunes, with our wooden belly boards until our thighs were worn red against the grain and our backs browned by the sun.

Without those early memories and the strong connection to the heartbeat of the Atlantic, I don't think I would have survived the coming years, when I was torn from my Mum who was to die of breast cancer when I was only eleven. That coastline became a parent, my guiding light as it nurtured me into womanhood, protected me for human fallibility and guiding me through live's painful hurdles.

For many years, I tried to share this Ocean alchemy through my photography, endeavouring to provide a window of connection with vast waves of wisdom and beautiful, free open horizons where the soul could wander freely. And now, as an ocean therapy practitioner, I'm able to witness firsthand how the ocean is not only a sanctuary for me, but for all of human consciousness that has become so weary of the day-to-day struggles of being human.

So what is Ocean - or Blue Therapy as it is sometimes called? In simple terms, Ocean Therapy taps into the innate healing rhythms of the sea and the movement of water, something humanity has revered for millennia.

But why is the ocean so potent, and how can you, too, ride its waves toward well-being?

The ocean’s benefits are deeply rooted in both science and history. Firstly, seaside air is rich in negative ions which are the molecules, that studies show, may boost mood and energy. The rhythmic sound of waves also lowers stress, and saltwater itself has natural cleansing properties. Historically, cultures have flocked to shores for healing, you only have to think of the Roman thermal baths by the Mediterranean or Japan’s hot spring traditions.

Today, ocean therapy is a bridge—melding ancient respect for water with modern wellness practices. In practice, ocean therapy can take many forms. Guided beach walks, floating meditations in calm waters, or mindful breathing sessions by the shore—all connect us to something vast, steady, and alive.

As an ocean practitioner, coach and holistic lifestyle consultant, living here on the mesmerising North Atlantic coast, I can tailor these experiences to my clients needs - whether it’s grounding in the sand, using ocean sounds for relaxation, or immersing in the cool waters, or surfing the waves with a handcrafted bellyboard.

Why see an ocean therapy practitioner? Because we offer a safe, guided connection to something that is far bigger ourselves, that simultaneously leads us back to ourselves. In daily life, we’re bombarded by noise and stress. The ocean reminds us to slow down, to breathe with the tide, and to trust in the ebb and flow of life. With a practitioner, you have a guide who understands how to harness these elements, keeping you safe while unlocking the ocean’s healing potential.

In short, the ocean isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a living partner in well-being - it nurtures, connects and provides safe haven. And as we embrace its vastness, we remember that we too, are part of this grand, ever-moving ocean, capable of healing, growing, and finding peace in each wave and in each breath.
